Obesity: The Plague of the 21st century

Obesity is skyrocketing to epic proportions. It’s the black death of the 21st century.

Obesity affects over 1/3 of the US population. That’s over a billion people. Due to the growing chain of fast food restaurants, the US Obesity Rates have been steadily climbing since the mid 20th century.

As of September 2016, every single state has an obesity rate of over 20%, while rates exceed 30% in 25 states and 35% in 4 states.

This is dangerous. Real dangerous.

What is Obesity?

Contrary to popular belief, Overweight and obese are two different things.

  • Overweight refers to an excess amount of body weight. That can come from fat, water, muscle, or just bone mass.
  • Obese refers to an unhealthy excess amount of body fat.

Most people use their BMI to estimate overweight/obesity:

However, this is not always a good representation of their classification because BMI uses your height and your weight. Those with heavy bones/muscles will generally have a larger BMI than those who don’t.

Here is an online BMI calculator for adults: BMI Calculator

A study has shown that if current worldwide trends continue, 1 in 5 people will be obese by 2025.
